To start birdwatching you will need: A Notebook for writing down what birds you see A Good Pair of Binoculars for viewing the birds Some Walking Shoes, for taking bird hikes A Bird Idenification Book. (i.e. Peterson's) Begin by just observing birds in your backyard. Write down those you see, to familiarize yourself with the birds in your area. Listen to thier calls and songs and memorize them (A song is more than three notes. A call is less than three). Take bird hikes in places where they are likely to be such as woods, streams, lakes, and fields away from many people. When observing, stay very quiet and still - even get low to the ground - and pretend you are a tree stump. You can draw the birds you see. First make a rough sketch of the bird's position, then refer to a bird book to put in the details and markings. Put up feeders in your yard. Mount them at least 4' off the ground as protection against predators. Sunflower seeds attract a large variety of birds, as do thistle seeds. Following these guidelines, you can begin birding in your own neighborhood! Remember: Take nothing but notes and memories, leave nothing but footprints. Happy Birdwatching! | |||||||||||||||||||||||
